Kenya Karii AA | washed
On the border between the coffee regions of Nyeri and Kirinyaga, Karii factory serves 600 smallholder farmers, who have about 180 coffee trees each, on average. Most farmers in Karii grow SL-28 or SL-34 varieties, typical to Kenya, and they are also starting to use shade trees to combat the climate change happening throughout the area.
The factory is operated by the Mutira Farmer Cooperative Society, which is the umbrella over several regional coffee; there are around 4,000 members who are part of whole society.
Producers deliver their cherries and the cooperative sorts, weighs and then blends them with the rest of the day’s deliveries of the same quality, to be processed. The Rundu river provides water for the processing: ripe cherries are brought by the farmer members, depulped and dried to just below 12% moisture. They’re dry milled at a facility near Karatina town, at Central Kenya Coffee Mills.
